Friends

Greetings—

I'd like you to meet Mike and Cristobal. They live in the "Transient" hotel here in Kenosha. I'm not really sure what Cristobal's story is, as he doesn't talk. I can tell you that Mike is a Vietnam veteran and works in the kitchen of the hotel. For whatever reason Mike became very excited when he saw me walking around downtown with my camera and he asked me to take a picture of him and his, "...good friend, Cristobal."

Mike related a story of one of his old friends from the service who was able to acquire a bunch of awesome camera gear overseas back in the day — dirt cheap, of course — and how they played around with the really big lens that they could see into windows of the girls blocks away.

Then Mike asked if he could get a copy of the photo and I told him of course I'd get him one. My guess is that he either thought I would blow him off or he forgot about it entirely ... much more likely considering Mike's mental state. But it was about a week later when I stopped at the hotel and dropped off a nice 8"X10" print for him. I didn't get to see him but a nice lady at the front desk said she'd make sure he got it.

I hope he did and I hope he enjoys it.

You, sir, are not just a master photographer who provides friendship and inspiration to all you meet, but you are a fine person. One of the best I know. What a poignant piece here today, Gareth, I am so glad I got to see this.
